“Unposing” a model for a natural looking smile

August 21st, 2005 · No Comments

_MG_7762This series shows a simple technique to use to “unpose” your model. Many times patients do not know how to look relaxed in photos or they feel they have to pose themselves in a very hard and unnatural way because that how they always had photos taken. This usually results in a forced smile that is not attractive. A simple trick that can often work well is to have you patient face you, then turn all the way around until they just pass you up, and then turn right back to you. In other words, have them spin around. At this point you should get a natural shot that does not have a “posed” look to it. Take shots during the entire spin. You never know which shot will be the best. Make sure you shutter is set at least to 90 or faster if possible. Otherwise the photos will be blurry. This means you have to have a lot of light if you are using AV mode. In these photos Heather, Miss Teen United States, and I are out in the open in the bright sunlight. I have her back to the sun so she is not washed out but the sun still gives enough light to allow a shutter speed of 250.

Give this method a try. It is very simple so most patients can spin around unless you just took them off the nitrous. In which case they will looked relaxed already.
