Passing of Dr. Hugo Retief

January 29th, 2006 · 4 Comments

Just a short note to everyone that Hugo Retief pased away. Hugo was a brilliant individual who contributed extensively to the field of dental adhesion and microleakage.  Originally from South Africa, he spent that last part of his carreer at The University of Alabama in Birmingham in my department. Hugo was most generous with his time and talent. Those of us who worked closely with him will miss his wit and contributions to the profession.

    Karl:

I was so sad to see that Hugo had passed away. I have not seen him in years, but I remember him and Ina with great fondness. As a dental student in South africa, I undertook my first research project in the MRC Unit while he was still Director. I will always remember his work ethic, his good humor, and twinkly eyes when he teased me about my research findings. Do you have any information on the family’s wishes with regard to donations etc?

    Pamela,
Right now I am in Tucson, Arizona and do not have the original information that I received related to his passing. I will send you the appropriate information when I get back home in a couple of weeks. I don’t recall however, any information from Ina his wife related to that. I will check it out nonetheless. By the way, there is a library in one of the universities in Brazil dedicated to him I believe that it is Bauru
It was great hearing your thoughts.

    Karl,
I am sorry to hear about the sad news concerning Hugo Retief. He was one of the finest men I have met and he gave the UAB program 100%, especially in the area of mentoring young students. He will be missed.

    Hello Page,
It sure has been a long time since I last saw or talked to you. Hopefully everything is going well for you. UAB sure lost a lot of good people over the last 10 to 15 yeras. Yes, Hugo was great and will never be replaced. He was very successful in bringing people together for the purpose of conducting research.
