What makes you like a website? The colors, photos, look and feel of the site? The motion, the videos, or a fancy opening page? The things that appeal to humans do not appeal to search engine spiders.

SEO spiders refers to the technology behind indexing websites. If the spiders like your site, it will rank well in Google, Yahoo, and other search engines. If the spiders don’t like your site, in competitive markets, it will get buried. To spiders, words are like big, fat flies. SEO spiders’ mouths water at the thought of a website with a ton of content on it.

But you like the visual elements. That’s okay. You don’t have to give up the visual elements of your website in order to please the spiders – but you may have to compromise.

TNT Dental has been creating custom websites for dentists and dental professionals for years now. The company has an entire department dedicated to SEO, and another dedicated to copywriting. In fact, the artists and copywriters work closely with the tech guys to ensure that every client gets the best of all worlds – a visually appealing website that appeals to search engines without having too many words on each page.

“I’ve heard that Flash is bad for SEO.”
First, let’s just bust this myth wide open. This statement is only half of the story, though it is true. Spiders don’t read Flash. If your website has an opening page that is only one large, moving image, and a small button in the corner says “enter,” SEO spiders will move on to tastier websites. We call this type of opening page a “splash” page. Don’t do it.

However, if you want to incorporate movement, or Flash, into your site, spiders don’t really care. As long as the Flash elements are in a location that doesn’t interfere with the way the spiders read the site, you’re golden.

“I have a website. I need more content. What do I do?”
First, decide which services you want to promote. I’m not suggesting you hard sell CEREC crowns, but if you want to do more CEREC crowns, your SEO team needs to know. A good SEO team will research the popularity of terms associated with CEREC crowns and determine what your keywords should be. Then, a copywriter who understands SEO will create custom copy (it must be custom or spiders will reject it) with necessary keywords and headings. This page will be added to your website in a logical location, linked to from related pages, and backend optimization (the stuff you don’t see on the site) will be completed.

In short, for every service you want to promote, original, optimized copy should be written and integrated into the website. The best part of this whole thing is that you don’t have to know Internet technology, SEO, or copywriting to make this happen. Simply call TNT at 877-868-4932 and discuss your ideas. The experts there will be happy to talk with you about your Internet marketing goals. TNT is a company focused on dentists and dentistry. They know your job, they know how to advertise your company on line. Give TNT a call today.

In the state where “Virtue, Liberty, and Independence” is the motto, dentists and dental care professionals can no longer date their patients. The State Board of Dentistry and Pennsylvania Dental Association disagree on the new ruling. The Board has deemed that sexual misconduct is defined as such: “[a]ny sexual conduct with a current patient, including words, gestures or expressions, actions or any combination thereof, which are sexual in nature, or which may be construed by a reasonable person as sexual in nature.” If a PA dentist, hygienist, or EFDA is going to date a patient, with consent of both parties, that patient must switch dentists and be a registered patient at another dental practice or have not been seen by the dentist for three months.

Pennsylvania Dental Association members think that romantic relationships in which both adult parties consent should not be considered sexual misconduct. Furthermore, they are concerned about trying to enlist young, unmarried dentists to work in rural areas. The Board counters this with the fact that California, Maine, Iowa, and Mississippi have similar regulations.

After all, it’s the thing to do. Everyone’s online these days – at least everyone who you want to attract to your practice. The problem is, no matter how sensational your website, it is potentially competing with every other dental website in the world. How can you narrow your market to limit your competition and get your site in front of your target audience?

First of all, you need a solid SEO strategy. SEO stands for search engine optimization. In short, SEO is the elements that make a website show up closer to page one or two, ideally closer to the top of page one, in search engine results. A person is looking for a new dentist. He goes to his laptop, types his city and “dentist” into the Google or Yahoo search bar, then hits enter. A list pops up. Now how can your name and website be on that list?

Over time, all sites that are built with what we call live text (instead of all artwork) will show up somewhere in ranking reports. To make it to the top of the list, however, your site needs a good SEO strategy based on keywords that accurately and tightly represent your services and location. The location keywords will narrow your competition. If you’re in Boston, then Boston and some surrounding towns should be worked into the live text on your website, along with the services you offer.

Spiders are the mechanisms that read websites and determine their rankings. To rank well, your site must please the spiders. Some things tick the spiders off. In fact, if you use “black hat” tactics, your site could actually be banned from search engines. Your best bet is to choose a search engine marketing company that understands your market and the Internet. Because SEO rules and practices change constantly, it is in your best interest to let someone else – an expert – take care of your SEO program so that you can take care of your patients and your business.

One dental website design firm, TNT Dental, offers a comprehensive SEO program. To understand your practice and market, a TNT representative will interview you. Then a team of SEO experts will develop a targeted keyword list based on the interview. Your site will be written, developed, and optimized (or revised if it is an existing site) according to this strategy, and in three to six months, you should have a good idea of how the strategy is working for you. Monthly reports can show you how many folks are visiting your site, where they come from, where they enter, and where they leave, as well as what they’re reading while they’re on your site. If you want to promote a new service, simply talk with your SEO team about your idea, and they can add the service to your SEO program.

There’s no need for American dentists to compete with dentists in Australia. A good, targeted SEO program will focus your website’s marketing toward the audience you want to target. Call TNT Dental today for more information: 877-868-4932.

By now all dental offices should have and see the value of a web site. A really nice, flashy web site is terrific BUT if no one ever finds it what good is it to the bottom dollar of your practice. You have to know how to drive the general public to your site so they know you, your Team and the terrific dental services you offer. Just this past Friday, while I was in the office working, I received an email from a client I had seen as a new patient in February of 2005. On her visit we had taken digital photos so she could see her dental needs and problems as we see them. She then talked with me about what she wanted to change in her mouth. Together we formulated a treatment plan to help her accomplish her goals. Did she schedule, no, she did not have the money. I had not heard from her until Friday. Her email stated she had been able to obtain financing at last, and was ready to schedule her $22,000 case. The link to the web is, she was originally referred to our practice through a link we have with About Cosmetic Dentistry.com, that directed her to our web site. From our web site she called to schedule her original appointment. And now, 2 years later that same web optimization, linked her back to our site where she found the link to financing through Enhance Patient Finance and emailed me to schedule her appointment. The Internet and your web site truly are the key to an untapped public who is now better educated and researching the type of dentist they want.

FYI there is a tremendous program being offered to help you better understand the Internet link for your practice. It is in Austin Texas at The Hyatt Lost Pines Resort on March 23 and 24th. It is being offered by ACE (The Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics).

Lecture & panel discussions will feature dental experts Dr. Tom Hedge, Dr. Marvin Berlin, Dr. Kent Smith, Dr. Peter Boulden, Dr. Curtis Westersund, Dr. Gerilyn Alfe, Dr. Anthony Vocaturo, Dr. Tim Hale & Dr. Peter Masci.

You’ll also have the opportunity to learn from industry experts Mr. Zach Hoffman of Dental SEO, Mr. Jim Higgins of Smile Reminder, Mr. Tim Kelley & Mr. Tim Healy of TNT Dental, Mr. Dan Scott of Roadside Multimedia, Mr. Howie Horrocks of New Patients, Inc., Dr. Bill Jackson of PlanetDDS, and Ms. Jennifer Poppers of ShopPR.

Do not miss this tremendous chance to get on board with the newest wave in attracting new clients to your practice and increasing your bottom dollar.

We have all been on other forums where anyone can post anything about anyone. This often leads to angry and self-ritious grandstanding. In other words, confrontation for the sake of protecting ones turf, as opposed to simply sharing ideas for the simple sake of helping others. All the authors of this forum have the obligation and responsibility to maintain an environment where anyone feels comfortable asking a question or sharing a view without being ridiculed or interrogated. There are too many forums where this mentailty exist. The end result is that only a few meaningful post are presented which are then attacked and no one else post anything. That will not happen here. If you have any question or want to share an idea in a thoughtful way, please do so. That is what this forum is about. We have the best and brightest here and they truly want to help others achieve the same success that they have. They willingly share their ideas and experiances without any form of compensation other than the warm feeling of knowing they made a difference. So I personally invite all of you to ask or share whatever you wish because I bet you will have more to teach me as I have to teach you.

To all of you who still do not have a web site; here is another reason to get one NOW!!! Communication with you patients, new and current. This weekend I received two phone calls from “new” patients who are interested in getting dentistry done that they have put off. They both stated that they had found the office through our web site. So, how did they contact me by phone, on the weekend. Well, on the web site it has the office telephone number, they called and listened to our message which stated the office was closed and would reopen on Monday, it has a message that list my personal cell phone in case of emergencies. They both called because getting in the beginning of the week to get a complimentary consultation is an emergency to them. I was able to spend a few minutes on the phone with both of them and a sured them we will get them in the schedule ASAP. Through a simple screening process I was able to establish that they are the kind of patients we are looking for and feel sure that their search ended for someone to do their dentistry with our phone conversation. New patients like to know they can reach you; get a web site let them know you are out there and how great your practice is. It works. WWW.tntdental.com is a good place to start!

It’s easy to find out how. One of my favorite places to go to find out who owns a domain is Whois Source. Not only do they tell you who owns it, you can see a screen shot of the site if one exists and lots of other information as well. The other thing I love about this site is that there is no annoying characters to type to get to the answer. If you type in the words you would like to use for a domain, it will even provide you with suggestions available for purchase. See one you like? Let us know and we will gladly buy it for you.

You should know that your site may take up to 3 months or longer after your site goes live before the search engines discover and index your site.

There is a lot of competition these days for terms like “cosmetic dentist your city, surrounding area, state,” etc. In fact, most of the sites that come up these days are not individual practices, but sites that are used to find practice sites. And it costs money to be included in these “find a dentist” websites.

It wasn’t always this way and that could change again. Google started it late in 2003 when they changed the criteria used for site rankings. Up until that point, it was relatively easy for an individual practice site to sit at the top of the rankings. Among other things, total number of pages and the number of sites linking to a site received additional weight. The result: individual practice sites are virtually invisible on the first 3 pages of most Google searches.

So what can you do? Paid listings are one way to get around this. Both Google and Overture provide economical ways to “bid” on keyword phrases and come up in “sponsored” link areas. Some terms can be purchase for as little as 15¢ per click in some markets.

Another option is to hire a search engine marketing company to help you with specific strategies to get found. We can help you work though all of the details. Please call us and we will help you figure out the best approach for your practice.
