Dentists First to Find Eating Disorders in Patients

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week begins Monday, February 22nd. This sounds like a medical issue, but the ADA tells us that dentists are often the first to detect eating disorders in patients. DentalBlogs interviewed Dr. Max Anderson, Dental Affairs Advisor for Delta Dental, to learn what dentists should watch for, how to address concerns with patients, and where to find resources for staff and patient education. Dr. Max Anderson received his dental degree from the University of Nebraska (1976), his Master of Science in Restorative Dentistry form The University of Michigan (1983) and his Master of Education from George Washington University (1988). He completed a career in the United States Navy in 1990 and has served on the faculty of the University of Washington and Indiana University. He served as the Vice President and Dental Director of Washington Dental Service (WDS) a Delta Dental Plan, in Seattle, Washington from 1994 through 2004. His primary research and academic interests are in the management of dental diseases through treating these diseases as bacterial infections and in the analysis of insurance treatment data to identify best practices on risk adjusted populations. He is currently actively consulting regarding risk assessed evidence based dental plan designs, health outcomes.

Dr. Anderson continues his active role in the professional organizations and public service with a primary focus on operative dentistry and cariology. He is actively engaged in research activities at the University of California at Los Angeles where he is researching mechanisms to eradicate dental caries through intelligent drug design. He is the representative to the American Dental Association’s Code Revision Committee (CDT-2007 & CDT- 2009) for Delta Dental Plans Association and a member of its Dental Policy Committee and Chairs the ADA’s Standards Committee on Dental Informatics Subcommittee on the dental extension of the Continuity of Care Record. He is the President & CEO of C3 Jian, Inc. a California based biotechnology company developing targeted antimicrobial drugs.

We have all been on other forums where anyone can post anything about anyone. This often leads to angry and self-ritious grandstanding. In other words, confrontation for the sake of protecting ones turf, as opposed to simply sharing ideas for the simple sake of helping others. All the authors of this forum have the obligation and responsibility to maintain an environment where anyone feels comfortable asking a question or sharing a view without being ridiculed or interrogated. There are too many forums where this mentailty exist. The end result is that only a few meaningful post are presented which are then attacked and no one else post anything. That will not happen here. If you have any question or want to share an idea in a thoughtful way, please do so. That is what this forum is about. We have the best and brightest here and they truly want to help others achieve the same success that they have. They willingly share their ideas and experiances without any form of compensation other than the warm feeling of knowing they made a difference. So I personally invite all of you to ask or share whatever you wish because I bet you will have more to teach me as I have to teach you.

Fluoride: Topical vs Systemic 2005.

I. Topical
A. FDA controlled substance: Toothpaste and Dental Office
B. 10 to 15% reduction in decay.
C. Warning on Toothpasteif0.5 mg of fluoride swallowed to call poison control center.
D. Use only for patients with a highactive decay rate.
E. ADA does not recommend fluoridated toothpaste under the age of 6.

II. Systemic
A. Benefits:
1. Early studies showed 0.6 ppmF in water optimal.
2. Showed delayed erruption of about 1 yr.
