Fresh breath. White teeth. Balanced oral health.

Evora Plus™ mints for adults and EvoraKids™ chews for children add good bacteria and a low level of hydrogen peroxide to the oral environment for fresher breath, a healthier mouth, and whiter teeth. Twenty-five years of research went into the making of this innovative product, developed by Jeffrey Hillman, DMD, PhD.

The company’s website states: “Within 30 days of using EvoraPlus twice daily, the natural healthy oral balance of good bacteria will be greatly restored and you will begin to notice a whiter, brighter smile and long-lasting fresh breath.”

How it Works

For some time, scientists have known that probiotics promote good digestive health. Yogurt, a food rich with probiotic power, is often recommended for patients with stomach aches and digestion issues. The same philosophy backs the effectiveness of Evora.

Good oral bacteria “crowd out” bad bacteria to promote a positive balance in the mouth. In addition, by reducing bad bacteria, Evora mints reduce potential for foul breath caused by bad bacteria. Good bacteria actually bond to teeth and gums, and even below the gum line for lasting results. This is unlike traditional mouthwashes that kill all bacteria in the mouth, not just the bad bacteria.

As for teeth whitening, Evora’s by product is a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, which is known to naturally brighten tooth enamel without causing sensitivity or irritation to oral tissues.

Each Evora mint has one calorie, and patients are instructed to use two mints each day for best results. Today, Evora is sold at these retail stores: Albertson’s, A&P, Kerr Drug, Walgreen’s, Sweetbay, Heartland, and Pathmark. Online, consumers can purchase Evora through ActiveForever.com, CVS.com, Drugstore.com, ProHealth.com, Quick2You.com, Swansonvitamins.com, Target.com, and Walgreens.com.

Visit Evora online at http://www.evoraplus.com/.

Apparently, he went to his child’s orthodontist and was told that HE needed braces. Well Tom, like any successful businessman, just couldn’t sacrifice his image. After all, his stunning smile got him pretty far in life. Invisalign tickled his fancy, though, and he was sold. Cher, Diana Ross, and the late Michael Jackson also underwent orthodontic therapy, says the Inside Edition anchor.

Other stars who’ve undergone noticeable cosmetic dentistry include Hilary Duff, who got whiter and bigger; George Clooney, who got whiter with a more uniform edge; Zac Efron and Nicolas Cage, who had big diastemas that are no longer in existence; and Miley Cyrus who had work done, but could use some more. Simon Cowell is hard on everyone – including himself. Looks like he got veneers. And Jeremy Piven looks a heck of a lot better than he did in high school. But the and who could forget the drastic Elliot Yamin makeover?

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has estimated that the demand for tooth whitening has increased by 300% over the past decade. Tooth whitening is the number one dental procedure requested by people under the age of 20 and between the ages of 30 and 50. Initially, tooth whitening was performed in the dentist’s office and this might require several visits. The process has become simpler and is now offered as an over the counter product allowing people to perform their own tooth whitening.

Two companies, Procter & Gamble and Colgate Palmolive, dominate the market for over the counter tooth whitening products. As of 2003, these companies had about 84% of the market. Americans spent about $297 million on home use tooth whitening products during the year ending March 23, 2003. This was an increase of 90% over the prior year’s sales. Each company has introduced additional brands of tooth whitening products for use at home. The names of some of the major brands are provided in Table 1.

Other companies have been entering the home use market. These include Bident, Mentadent, and Rembrandt. The overall market for tooth whitening products grew by 596% between 2000 and 2005; in 2005 there was a decline of 23% because of the introduction of other products.

Overall cosmetic dentistry has surged with growth rates of 12.8% in 2006 and 10.9% in 2007. The demand for bleaching and whitening of teeth has been one of the top requested services. However, the cost of using a dentist has become too high for some people and the result is the growth in over the counter products. With the increases in the older population, the need to look young has become even more important. And having a bright white smile is a major part of “looking young.”

By altering skin tone and tooth brightness on photographs of smiling women, researchers created a way to test how people perceive beauty in regards to tooth enamel color. Seventy dentists and 70 laypeople answered questions about the photos. The findings show that skin color affects the shade that is attractive on teeth.

According to the report:

“Dentists and laypeople did not perceive the brightest tooth shade to be the most attractive, and they did not perceive all skin colors to be equally attractive with bright white teeth. Respondents perceived dark skin with bright white teeth and fair skin with dark teeth as relatively unattractive.”

A new study shows that a tiny amount of enamel decalcifies after application of home teeth-whitening products. Teeth can recalcify after minimal enamel loss, and fluoride assists in remineralization. So basically, the five brands of home whitener* that were evaluated are still considered safe.

What’s the point, then? The study’s findings provide reason for manufacturers to tweak home whitening systems and improve future generations of the products.

While other studies have tried and failed to measure enamel loss, this recent study by researchers at The Ohio State University measured enamel reduction to the billionth of a meter using a nanometer scale, rather than in microns, which measure to a millionth of a meter. Enamel loss ranged from 1.2 to 2 nanometers after home teeth whitening was applied. It seems that white strips tend to reduce enamel less than tray methods.

Maybe it’s the artistry that goes into reshaping, coloring, and building a new smile; maybe it’s the life-changing results in a patient’s life… The survey says that the favorites rank as follows, cosmetic dentistry at 37%, implants at 28%, sedation at 16%, and Invisalign at 13%. Another major difference, nearly half of GDs prefer cosmetics as their favorite, whereas only 16% of specialists feel the same. Specialists preferred dental implants. A geographical line is evident, as well. City dentists liked Invisalign, but their rural peers didn’t care for the clear braces as much. It is those country dentists who favor cosmetics most – 50%. Urban dentists came in at 29%.

These are dental public health, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral and maxillofacial pathology, endodontics, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, pediatric dentistry (pedodontics), periodontics, and prosthodontics. As you are well aware, cosmetic dentistry isn’t on the list. A survey at DPR World asks whether cosmetic dentistry should become a board-certified specialty. At present, the votes are split almost perfectly, with 51% saying yes and 49% saying no.

While many dentists actively pursue regular CEs in esthetics, any GD can hang a shingle touting “cosmetic dentist.” And because cosmetics accounted for about $500K per practice annually – that’s $2.75 billion total – everyone wants to be a cosmetic dentist! Problem is, the general public doesn’t necessarily know that cosmetic dentistry is not a regulated specialty. Is this misleading? In advertising, a dentist is not supposed to claim to “specialize” in cosmetic dentistry, per the ADA. And a wise consumer will check out a cosmetic dentist’s portfolio before making a move. Still… is it fair? Share your opinion at DPR World!

The most important thing in regards to elective cosmetic dentistry is to have a system in the practice that allows the patient to discuss things they want to include in the treatment plan. The Dawson Center is against promoting dentistry that a patient does not need, but many people want elective dental work. Digital pictures open up an opportunity for a patient to see the potential for his smile through before and (digital imaging) afters. You can show people where they are and what’s possible. You usually don’t even have to bring up cosmetics because they see it for themselves. It’s important to let the patient decide for himself.

A unique blend of traditional, straight-wire braces and removable, clear braces, the SpeedAligner can realign teeth quickly and conveniently. Appropriate cases include relapses, crowding, and rotations, and the device is intended primarily for cosmetic use. So how does it work? Springs! The QuickSprings (available in five sizes) apply continuous, moderate pressure to move the six anterior teeth, including their roots. Expansion screws and additional springs are also available. And you’ll love the fact that the SpeedAligner will be delivered to your office activated and adjusted, ready to use.

Female dentists reported a higher conversion rate, and some dentists linked the disheartening statistic to the economy, their region and clientele, or the feeling that cosmetic dentistry/teeth whitening is considered hype. Of the dentists who reported success with conversion, the overall feeling is that teeth whitening is an integral part of cosmetic dentistry and that it can "open the door" to cosmetic smile enhancements for patients.

Any office completely focused on elective procedures is at risk to take a hit if we slip into a recession. I have always believed a good brand is a practice that can solve problems – whether esthetic, disease driven, or functional. Problems like bite issues and missing teeth affect chewing, function, and cause tooth wear. These areas of dentistry aren’t as effected by the economy because people look at fixing problems as a need, not an option. Dentists with practices known for only elective dentistry should seek training in implant restorations and fixing problems. If you’re prepared, you’ll survive any downturn in the economy.

According to TheWealthyDentist.com, 62% of surveyed dentists love the dental celebs. Research reveals that two out of three dentists believe dental celebrities are good for the profession. After all, cosmetic dentistry is still on the rise.

Many people attribute the popularity of veneers, teeth whitening, and other smile enhancements to the public awareness created by television shows like Extreme Makeover. Television commercials for Lumineers fuel the cosmetic dentistry engine, as well.

The one-third of dentists who feel like celebs are harming the profession believe that all of the publicity is placing the focus on appearance over dental health.

Sixty-nine percent of general dentists approved of celebs, whereas only 32% of specialists gave the thumbs-up. Is this because GDs can claim to be "cosmetic dentists" without having to meet any standards set by the ADA? Makes you think.

Geography had little impact on the results of the survey, with 63% of both urban and suburban dentists, and 55% of rural dentists, approving of dental celebrities.

Read more of this interesting survey and dentists’ comments here.

The AACD’s stats on cosmetics are quite impressive. Read them here.
