I can’t imagine doing restorative dentistry without a good relationship with an oral surgeon or periodontist. Implants are an important part of comprehensive treatment planing. Research shows, a single-tooth implant fares better than a 3-part bridge. That’s why I encourage my patients to get implants rather than bridges.

There’s a great number of patients who are edentulous or edentulous just in the lower arch and cannot wear a denture comfortably. Some patients need just two or three implants or the bar system for denture stability or full fixed dentures. I am seeing that through the tough economic times, cosmetic dentistry is down, but implants are still popular. There is no question that the statistics show implants and grafts are down – still, the number of people who want the procedures is increasing.

I predict while things are softer now, and there still is growth in the dental implant industry, we’re going to see explosive growth in this area when the economy turns around.

A recent Marketwire post provided this information about dental implants:

“Kalorama forecasts both market sectors [implants and grafts] will experience gains of 5% in 2009, the lowest annual increase in more than a decade for either.”

“Tooth loss among the elderly population will create some growth in the $3 billion global dental implant market despite the recession.”

“Simple demographics will force some growth in the market — the U.S. elderly population that is projected to be twice as large in 2030 as it was in 2000 — and tooth loss rates are high among this population, but there will still be customers who will have to put off implants.”

“The recession is expected to pose a challenge for future sales of dental implants because the dental implant industry relies heavily on the ability of patients to pay for treatments out of their disposable income.”
