This little device is a “must have” for a dental practice recall system. All occlusal surfaces can be evaluated for hidden decay an explorer will not find. I have never found it to be wrong. It works like this. You move the laser tip over the occlusal surface pits and fissures. The unit will give you a two digit reading. I treat everything 40 and over.
The unit works by measuring fluorescence. Un decayed enamel and denting does not fluorescess. Decay does.

I have had the diagnadent since it came out and although my patients are impressed with this high tech gizmo , I haven’t found it any more accurate than taking a bonding light and transilluminating the suspected portion of the tooth. If it looks funky when transilluminated it is a good idea to explore with decay. As far as I know all dentists allready have bonding lights in their offices.

We just had the rep in for this and we are not quite sold….since we practiced on ourselves and we have no decay we were unable to see what it does….I’m going to try the curing light instead
