BSOD returns with a vengeance!

April 28th, 2006 · No Comments

After you install SP1, applications don’t start correctly, or hang, and the system starts blue screening often (several times a week, up to daily). Sometimes the Blue Screen of Death BSOD occurs when the nightly backup is running, sometimes when it completes. Occasionally the system might just reboot for no reason.

This post applies to SoftDent, EagleSoft, Dentrix, MediaDent, Dentech, EasyDental, PracticeWorks, and very probably every Windows based Dental Practice Management product that runs on Windows 2003 server.

Portable, Inexpensive PC Microscope

April 23rd, 2006 · No Comments

Look Here: Bodelin Technologies [1]

The ProScope™ is a USB hand held digital microscope designed for both PC and Macintosh platforms. With a high-quality CCD and universal lens mount, The ProScope™ can become a powerful asset to any classroom or lab. Learning has never been this fun… or this easy!
This thing is amazing and one of the most amazing things is the price. The deluxe kit sells for less than $1,000 and a basic is half that. We are seeing magnification cameras being introduced to dentistry priced at $20,000 and up (way up).
This would be a great product for a dental lab.
Plus, it was used on CSI …way cool.

What is HCI? – A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary

What is HCI? – A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary [1]

Short for human-computer Interaction, a discipline concerned with the study, design, construction and implementation of human-centric interactive computer systems. A user interface, such as a GUI, is how a human interacts with a computer, and HCI goes beyond designing screens and menus that are easier to use and studies the reasoning behind building specific functionality into computers and the long-term effects that systems will have on humans. HCI is a very broad discipline that encompasses different specialties with different concerns regarding computer development: computer science is concerned with the application design and engineering of the human interfaces; sociology and anthropology are concerned with the interactions between technology, work and organization and the way that human systems and technical systems mutually adapt to each other; ergonomics is concerned with the safety of computer systems and the safe limits of human cognition and sensation; psychology is concerned with the cognitive processes of humans and the behavior of users; linguistics is concerned with the development of human and machine languages and the relationship between the two.

How to Migrate to a New PC

April 21st, 2006 · No Comments

Look here  PC Magazine: How to Migrate to a New PC [1] for the whole article

You probably know the feeling: You sit down at a new computer, excited by its potential, only to realize that so much of what you really need is still stuck on your older system. Trading up to a new PC and a new operating system can be a bit like moving into a newer, bigger house; you’ve got to pack up and relocate every little thing you’ve amassed over the years, and then customize your new surroundings before it really feels like you’re at home. But how are you going to transfer your address book, e-mails, data files, Internet favorites, digital music and photos, specialized applications, desktop wallpaper and screen savers, and all your other personal paraphernalia, not to mention your application and system settings?

e-call

April 21st, 2006 · No Comments

One very simple way we can use the Internet to communicate with our patients is transforming our current paper re-call system to an electronic e-call system. Instead of sending a paper re-call card we can send an e-call notice via e-mail. In fact any piece of paper you are now sending to patients, third parties, colleagues, suppliers or anyone else can be transformed to an electronic message.
An e-call system will be much faster, easier to administer and more comprehensive than any paper system and it will save you lots of money. If you consider the cost of the card, postage, addressing and administrative time to create and mail the cards the annual savings to a typical office could be well over $6,000. In other words the savings from this one system alone could pay for your investment in dental software.
How would an e-call system ideally work? You would tell the computer one time what you wanted. That would be who gets a reminder and when, then you just forget it. After that the system would search the electronic appointment book for scheduled appointments, create a reminder message and send it via e-mail automatically. The system would then search for patients without an appointment who are due and send them a different e-mail message. And it would do it every day for whatever future time frame you choose. Furthermore the system does not have to be limited to prophy re-calls but could track any treatment that needed follow up such as a one year post op endo check
